Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2023

Thanks to everyone for their messages this evening after my appearance on the Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2023 competition.

It was an absolutely amazing experience but it was so different to what I was used to: I really had to dig deep.

The highlight for me was meeting the judges and presenters. They were all so friendly and professional. They make the filming look effortless when in reality it's really hard work. I was exhausted at the end of the day!

Also, meeting the other contestants and finally being able to talk to people in the same position as me.

The biggest challenge, apart from the obvious nerves, was the extremely hot weather! Who knew that there is such a thing as a stay wet pallet that stops your acrylics drying out?

The thing that surprised me most was that I didn't clam up in front of the camera. In fact I did the complete opposite!

I was entirely out of my comfort zone but I'm so pleased and proud of myself for doing it. It gave me a real sense of achievement and feeling of optimism and self belief for some time after.

So if the idea of being filmed whilst painting outdoors terrifies you, like it did me, but deep down you know you can do it, consider entering something like LAOTY as the decision will be out of your hands. Let the universe decide!
